Vilhelm Hammershøi, 1913
A quiet room, a single Windsor chair, and the unhurried attention Hammershøi gave to interiors. It rewards a slow look.

Vilhelm Hammershøi painted this interior in 1913, in oil on canvas. As the title tells us, a Windsor chair is at its heart, set within a room. Hammershøi is known for poetic, subdued interiors and portraits, and this work belongs to that quiet side of his painting. In 1905 Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and slow, and that it offers a reason to talk about what is essential in art. That seems a fitting way to approach a picture like this: without hurry, letting the room and its simple furnishing come forward gradually.
On your wall: Its restrained subject of a room and a single chair suits calm, uncluttered spaces such as a study, bedroom or hallway where a still presence is welcome.
