About this artwork

Karl Blossfeldt was a German photographer and sculptor, known for his close-up photographs of plants. Here he turns his attention to a plant of the Carduus genus, as the title suggests, a group that includes thistles. Looking this closely, a plant becomes a study in structure, and the eye follows its growth rather than its surroundings. Blossfeldt drew on a lasting interest in nature and in the ways plants grow, an interest he shared with his father. His plant photographs were gathered in the 1929 book Urformen der Kunst. This print comes from his work held in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.

On your wall: Its quiet, structural subject suits calm, uncluttered spaces such as a study, hallway or bedroom, particularly alongside natural materials and a restrained palette.
