Karl Blossfeldt, 1928
Two young fern fronds uncurl in sharp black and white, their spiralled tips drawn close so every leaflet can be studied.

This is a close-up photograph by Karl Blossfeldt of two shield fern fiddleheads, still unfurling. The tightly coiled tips and the small leaflets along each stem are shown in black and white, which lets the eye follow the spirals and the fine detail of the plant. The image is enlarged four times from the original, and it comes from Blossfeldt's Urformen der Kunst. Blossfeldt was drawn to the way plants grow, and he is best known for photographing them at close range.
On your wall: Its black-and-white palette and plant subject suit calm, uncluttered spaces such as a hallway, study, bedroom or a bright living room.

Karl Blossfeldt was a German photographer and sculptor. He is best known for his close-up photographs of plants and other living things, gathered in the 1929 publication Urformen der Kunst. Like his father before him, he drew inspiration from nature and from the ways in which plants grow.
