Vallotton made this woodcut in 1892. It shows a brawl in a crowded café, with men grappling across a table scattered with playing cards and coins. The image is printed in black and white, and the monogram FV appears in the design. Vallotton was a Swiss and French artist associated with the Nabis, and he played an important part in the development of the modern woodcut. The strong contrast of dark and light gives the crowded scene a sharp, immediate energy.
On your wall: Its bold black and white suits a study, hallway, dining room or living space where a graphic, understated piece with a little tension is welcome.
