Painted in 1895, this landscape shows Søndermarken in winter, with snow lying among the trees of the woodland. It is made in oil paint on canvas and belongs to the Hirschsprung Collection. Hammershøi is best known for his poetic, subdued portraits and interiors, and here the same restraint can be felt in a wintry outdoor subject. The scene rewards a slow look, as the trees and snow set a still, reflective mood.
On your wall: Its snowy, wooded subject suits calm spaces such as a bedroom, study or quiet hallway, especially in minimalist interiors where a restful landscape can breathe.

Text based on Hirschsprung Collection.
Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
