About this artwork

Piet Mondrian painted Tableau N VII in 1925 in oil on canvas, at a modest size of 48.5 by 43.5 centimetres. It belongs to the collection of the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. Mondrian is known as a Dutch painter and theorist who moved from figurative painting towards increasing abstraction, until his language was reduced to simple geometric elements. The title, with its numbered 'tableau', points to a work conceived as a considered, self-contained composition rather than a depicted scene.

On your wall: Its pared-back, geometric character suits calm, minimalist interiors such as living rooms, studies and hallways where a single, considered picture can sit against plain walls.
