Kandinsky painted 'Oriental' in Munich in 1909, and it is now in the Lenbachhaus in that city. The title points to an eastern theme, which the artist explored through colour and loose, painterly form rather than precise description. Kandinsky was born in Moscow and began his painting studies at the age of thirty. He is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, and this work comes from the years in which his style was developing in that direction.
On your wall: Its painterly, abstract character suits a living room, study or hallway where a modern interior could use a single work with presence and movement.
