Fernand Léger, 1924
Fernand Léger's 1924 still life takes a bust as its subject, the sort of quiet, classical object a modern painter could rework in his own bold language.

Painted in oil on canvas in 1924, this still life by Fernand Léger centres on a bust. It measures 65 by 50.3 centimetres, a portrait-format work. The title includes the words 'Définitif', pointing to a final state of the composition. Léger signed it in the lower right, then signed it again on the reverse, where he also added the date and the title. Léger is known for a boldly simplified approach to modern subject matter, which grew out of his own personal form of cubism.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract feel and still-life subject suit a living room, study or hallway, particularly where a considered piece of twentieth-century art is wanted.

Fernand Léger was a French painter, sculptor and filmmaker. He began by developing a personal form of cubism, then gradually moved towards a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subjects has led many to see him as a forerunner of pop art.
