This is a preparatory study for 'Les Plongeurs' ('The Divers'), made by Fernand Léger in San Francisco in 1941. He worked in gouache combined with pen and India ink on paper, so the piece draws on both painted colour and drawn line. The image measures 43 by 38.5 centimetres, set on a larger sheet. Léger is known for his boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter, and a study like this offers a glimpse of him working out an idea before the finished composition.
On your wall: Its graphic, modern character suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a confident abstract piece can anchor a contemporary or minimal scheme.

Fernand Léger was a French painter, sculptor and filmmaker. He began by developing a personal form of cubism, then gradually moved towards a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subjects has led many to see him as a forerunner of pop art.
