Joseph Stella, 1918
Smokestacks and silos rise in dark, angular forms against a sky of blue and yellow in Joseph Stella's semi-abstract view of industry.

Joseph Stella's Factories turns an industrial scene into a semi-abstract composition. Tall smokestacks, silos and other structures crowd the picture in dark tones, set against a sky of blue and yellow that gives the scene its glow and contrast. Stella was an Italian-born American painter, linked to Futurism and best known for his images of industrial America, and the same interest in the modern, built landscape can be felt here. The painting is signed with his name at the bottom. It is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
On your wall: Its dark forms and bold blue and yellow sky suit modern interiors such as a studio, study, loft or living room that can carry a strong graphic piece.

Joseph Stella was an Italian-born American painter associated with Futurism. He is best known for his portrayals of industrial America, above all his images of the Brooklyn Bridge. His work is also linked with American Precisionism, a movement active from the 1910s to the 1940s, and shows a keen interest in the modern city.
