Max Pechstein painted this work in 1929, and the title points to cherry blossom as its subject, placing it among his paintings of flowers. Pechstein was a German expressionist and a member of the Die Brücke group, and that background is a helpful way into his approach to colour and form. A floral subject like this one invites you to look closely at how blossom can be handled in a bold, painterly manner rather than a purely descriptive one. It is a work that rewards a slow look.
On your wall: Its floral subject suits living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, and it sits comfortably in modern interiors that welcome a touch of expressive colour.
