Painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1910, The Cow is an oil painting on canvas and belongs to the genre of animal art. The title tells us the subject is a cow, and it invites you to look closely at how a painter of this period approached a simple, familiar motif. Kandinsky is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, and he came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at the age of 30. Today the work is held in the Lenbachhaus.
On your wall: Its modern, painterly character suits a living room, study or reading corner where a considered piece of early twentieth-century art can sit alongside plain, uncluttered furnishings.
