About this artwork

Schlemmer's Tänzerin (Die Geste) of 1922 shows a stylised dancer in a blue costume, one arm raised in the gesture of the title. She stands on a stage with an orange-striped floor, set against a cream arched backdrop, while a blue cone of light falls across the scene. The figure is simplified rather than realistic, which gives the stage a calm, composed feel. It is painted in oil and tempera on canvas. Schlemmer was a painter, sculptor, designer and choreographer associated with the Bauhaus, and the work is now in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections.

On your wall: The cool blue and warm orange against soft cream suit a living room, study or hallway where a modern, graphic piece can add a little colour and movement.
