About this artwork

Treppenszene, or Stairway Scene, was painted by Oskar Schlemmer in 1932. Several stylised figures in coloured tops descend a staircase with handrails, each rendered in the simplified, sculptural manner Schlemmer is known for from his Bauhaus years. The stairwell gives the picture its structure, with the steps and rails setting a steady rhythm for the figures to move through. Schlemmer was a painter, sculptor, designer and choreographer, and that interest in the human form in space is easy to sense here. The work belongs to the Hamburger Kunsthalle.

On your wall: Its clean lines and stylised figures suit modern interiors, such as a hallway, stairwell, study or living room where a graphic, orderly image would sit well.
