Seated Man is a graphite drawing made in Austria in 1911 by Egon Schiele. The title tells us the subject: one man, seated. Graphite is a medium that rests entirely on line, and line is what Schiele is known for. His drawings are often recognised for their expressive, angular treatment of the body, and he is regarded as an early exponent of Expressionism. This sheet comes from the years when he was developing that approach, with Gustav Klimt as his mentor. The original belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its restrained graphite line and single figure suit studies, hallways, living rooms and offices where a quiet, modern drawing can sit alongside simple furnishings.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian Expressionist painter, mentored by Gustav Klimt, the figurative painter of the early twentieth century. His paintings and drawings are known for their intensity and raw sexuality, as well as for twisted body shapes and expressive line. He also produced many self-portraits, among them nude ones.
