Hilma af Klint, the Swedish artist (1862–1944), painted this work in 1913 in oil on canvas. It belongs to The US Series, Group VIII, where it is numbered 6, and it is also counted among The Paintings for the Temple. The work is held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation. Af Klint is regarded as one of the first major abstract painters in Western art, and she often made paintings that expressed spiritual ideas. This one invites slow, close looking rather than quick recognition of a subject.

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings rank among the earliest major abstract works in Western art. Much of her output came before the first purely abstract pieces by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. She belonged to The Five, a circle of women drawn to Theosophy, and her diagram-like paintings give visual form to complex spiritual ideas.
