About this artwork

Kandinsky made this work on 18 January 1911, in oil on cardboard, and it is still shown in the frame he painted himself. He made that frame especially for the piece, so picture and border belong together. The subject is a troika, a traditional carriage drawn by three horses. At the time Kandinsky was a founding member of Blaue Reiter, a loose alliance of artists in Munich. They shared a belief in the symbolic and spiritual power of colour and form, favoured spontaneous, intuitive painting, and looked to folk, medieval and non-Western art for inspiration. The troika and the painted frame both reflect that influence.

On your wall: Its expressive, folk-inspired spirit suits a living room, study or hallway where you want a lively modern abstract with a sense of story.
