About this artwork

Genesis II is a colour woodcut made in 1914 in black, green and ochre. Franz Marc created it to illustrate the creation story in the Book of Genesis, and he planned to include it in an illustrated Bible. Curving, horse-like shapes and a fish-like form at upper left appear to rise out of a background of chaos and movement. Like others in the Munich circle Der Blaue Reiter, Marc often turned to animals, which for him symbolised joyous rebirth. He died at Verdun in 1916, and his vision of an earthly paradise was cut short.

On your wall: Its earthy green and ochre tones and flowing, abstract shapes suit a study, living room or hallway, especially alongside natural materials and calm, neutral walls.
