Painted in 1912, Schafe is by Franz Marc, the German painter and printmaker who stands among the key figures of German Expressionism. The title tells us the subject: sheep, a theme that suits his lasting interest in animals. The work is executed in colour on canvas and belongs to the Saarland Museum. Marc was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, the journal whose name later came to describe the circle of artists who worked together around it.
On your wall: A fitting choice for a living room, study or bedroom where you would like a modern, abstract touch with an animal subject.
