This is a woodcut titled Horse by Franz Marc, a German painter and printmaker who stands among the key figures of German Expressionism. Woodcut is a direct technique: the image is cut into a block, inked and pressed to paper, which tends to give strong contrasts and clear, simplified shapes. The work belongs to the German printmaking of the twentieth century. Marc was also a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, the circle of artists that gathered around the journal of that name. Here, the horse is the single subject, and it invites a quiet, close look.
On your wall: A single horse in woodcut suits a study, hallway or living room where a graphic, understated piece of modern art would sit well beside simple furnishings.
