About this artwork

Painted in 1927, this oil on canvas shows houses set among dunes, a coastal landscape seen through the eyes of Max Pechstein. The work measures about 70 by 80 centimetres and carries his signature and the date in the lower right corner. Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, and a member of the Die Brücke group. The title also appears in the catalogue form Landschaft (Häuser in Dünen), which gives a clear sense of the subject: a modest group of buildings in a open, sandy setting.

On your wall: Its landscape subject and expressionist handling suit a living room, study or hallway where you would like a relaxed, modern touch of the outdoors.
