Variation Song was painted by Alexej von Jawlensky in 1916 and belongs to his group of Variation paintings. Jawlensky was a Russian expressionist painter who worked in Germany, and he was a key figure in the New Munich Artists' Association and Der Blaue Reiter, later joining Die Blaue Vier. The title suggests a musical idea, with a theme explored and altered, and it sits well with the abstract, expressive approach associated with the painter. It is a work to spend time with, returning to its details and letting its character unfold gradually.
On your wall: Its abstract, expressive character suits modern living rooms, studies and calm hallways, where it can add a thoughtful focal point to a simple scheme.
