About this artwork

Jawlensky, a Russian Expressionist painter who worked in Germany, shows a single house set among green hills and trees. Its gabled roof is a vivid red and its wall a warm yellow, both standing out against a sky of blue-violet. The colours are bold and set side by side with little softening, so the scene reads as much through colour as through the shape of the buildings and land. Jawlensky was a key member of Der Blaue Reiter, and this landscape sits comfortably within that Expressionist outlook. The work is held in the Museum Ludwig.

On your wall: Its strong reds, yellows and greens suit living rooms, studies and hallways where a lively landscape can bring colour to a plain wall.
