About this artwork

Alexej von Jawlensky painted Oberstdorf in 1912, using oil paint on cardboard. The title points to the place of that name, and the work belongs to the Museum Ludwig. Jawlensky was a Russian expressionist painter who worked in Germany, and he was a key member of the New Munich Artist's Association and of Der Blaue Reiter. Seen in that light, the picture fits well with the bold, modern approach to painting associated with his circle. Oil on cardboard gives the surface a direct, immediate quality, which suits a work that invites you to look closely.

On your wall: Its modern, expressionist character suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a considered piece of abstract-leaning art can sit comfortably alongside simple, contemporary furnishings.
