Marsden Hartley painted this work in 1917 in oil on panel. It shows one white flower with green leaves, standing in an orange vase against a dark blue background. The painting is signed M.H. The few elements and the strong contrast between pale bloom, warm vase and deep ground give the picture a calm, direct presence. Hartley was an American Modernist who developed his painting by observing Cubist artists in Paris and Berlin, and that interest in bold, simplified form suits a subject as spare as this one.
On your wall: The deep blue and warm orange suit a living room, study or hallway, especially where a clear pop of colour would lift a calm, modern scheme.

Marsden Hartley was an American Modernist who worked as a painter, poet and essayist. He developed his skills as a painter by studying the work of Cubist artists in Paris and Berlin, and that experience shaped his approach to the canvas. His writing sat alongside his painting as part of a wide-ranging creative life.
