Robert Delaunay painted this work in 1922, in oil on canvas. The title, Carousel of Pigs, points to a fairground subject: a merry-go-round turning with pigs as its riders. It belongs to Orphism, the movement Delaunay helped found with Sonia Delaunay and others, which is known for strong colour and geometric shapes. Delaunay himself was fond of experimenting with depth and tone, and of using colour boldly. Today the painting is held in the Musée National d'Art Moderne.
On your wall: Its playful subject and Orphist emphasis on colour and geometry suit a living room, studio or hallway where a modern, lively piece can set the tone.

Robert Delaunay was a French artist associated with the School of Paris. Together with his wife, Sonia Delaunay, and others, he co-founded Orphism, a movement known for strong colour and geometric shapes. His work shows a bold handling of colour and a clear delight in experimenting with depth and tone, and his later paintings grew more abstract.
