Painted in 1909, this work shows the Jardin du Luxembourg and the monument to the composer Frédéric Chopin. Henri Rousseau made it in oil on canvas. He is known as a French post-Impressionist working in the Naïve manner, and he was nicknamed Le Douanier because he had worked as a toll and tax collector. He began painting seriously in his early forties and left his job at 49 to paint full-time. The picture is now in the Hermitage Museum.
On your wall: A garden scene with a quiet, storybook character, it suits living rooms, studies and reading corners, particularly where you want a touch of nature and music-minded calm.

Henri Rousseau was a French post-Impressionist painter who worked in the Naïve, or Primitive, manner. He was nicknamed Le Douanier, a playful nod to his job collecting tolls and taxes. He began painting seriously in his early forties and, by the age of 49, had retired from that work to devote himself fully to art.
