Derain painted this view of boats on the beach at Collioure in 1905. The title and the subject place it among his paintings of the French coast, and it now belongs to a private collection. Derain co-founded Fauvism with Henri Matisse, and his work of 1905 and 1906 is known for its exuberant, daring colour. This scene of boats on the shore comes from that moment, when he was pushing colour well beyond what the eye strictly sees.
On your wall: A seaside subject with lively colour suits a bright living room, a hallway or a study that could use an energetic, modern note.

André Derain was a French painter and sculptor who co-founded Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse. His work from 1905 to 1906 is known for its bold, exuberant colour. By 1910 his style had grown more restrained, shaped by his study of Cézanne and the old masters. After the First World War he became a leading figure in the Return to order.
