Painted in 1914, Fenêtres sur la ville is a work by Robert Delaunay, the French artist who, together with his wife Sonia Delaunay and others, co-founded Orphism. The title points to a view through windows onto the city. It is made with wax paint on cardboard, an unusual choice of materials, and it is held today at the Lenbachhaus. Delaunay is known for strong colour, geometric shapes and a love of experimenting with depth and tone, and those interests sit at the heart of his work from this period.
On your wall: Its bold colour and geometric spirit suit a living room, studio or hallway where a modern, abstract piece can bring energy to the space.

Robert Delaunay was a French artist associated with the School of Paris. Together with his wife, Sonia Delaunay, and others, he co-founded Orphism, a movement known for strong colour and geometric shapes. His work shows a bold handling of colour and a clear delight in experimenting with depth and tone, and his later paintings grew more abstract.
