Ruehende Schiffe, which translates as 'Resting Ships', is a 1927 painting by Paul Klee, the Swiss-born German artist. The title points to ships at rest, and it offers a way into the picture as you look. Klee's style was highly individual, shaped by movements such as expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and that spirit of personal invention is a good companion when viewing this work. It is a piece to spend a little time with, letting the title guide your eye.
On your wall: Its modern, abstract character suits living rooms, studies and hallways where you want a quiet, thoughtful piece that rewards a second look.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
