Robert Delaunay, 1913
A woman with a parasol, painted by Robert Delaunay in 1913. The title points to a Parisian figure, seen through the artist's lively approach to colour.

Painted in France in 1913, this work is titled Femme à l'ombrelle ou La Parisienne, so a woman with a parasol is at its heart. It comes from the hand of Robert Delaunay, a French artist of the School of Paris who, together with his wife Sonia Delaunay and others, helped found Orphism. That movement is known for strong colours and geometric shapes. Delaunay himself was recognised for bold colour and a keen interest in experimenting with depth and tone, and his later work moved further towards abstraction.
On your wall: Its modern, colour-led character suits living rooms, studies and hallways where you would like a lively, contemporary note on the wall.
