Botanical Theater is a densely layered painting from 1934 in which stylised plants and flowers appear within stage-like framing forms. The surface is scratched, and the colour sits in warm brownish-pink tones. Klee combined oil paint, watercolour, pen and ink, so the work brings together painted passages and drawn line. The title suggests a garden presented as a small theatre, and the eye moves between the plant shapes and the forms that frame them. The original is held at the Lenbachhaus.
On your wall: Its warm brownish-pink tones and graphic, plant-filled detail suit a study, a living room or a hallway where a modern, abstract piece can reward a closer look.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
