This is Ernst Haeckel's Psammobates geometricus, made in 1904 and shown as plate 89 of Kunstformen der Natur, where it appears among illustrations of tortoises. The title names the tortoise, and the plate presents it as a subject for close looking. Haeckel trained as a zoologist and naturalist as well as working as an artist, and that mix of scientific curiosity and drawing shapes the way his plates are composed.
