About this artwork

This is a poster for a theatrical event: a dress rehearsal of Werther given by Sarah Bernhardt on Thursday 5 March 1903, in aid of the fishermen of Morbihan. It is a work by Alphonse Mucha, the Czech artist who worked in Paris during the Art Nouveau period and became well known for his decorative theatre posters, especially those made for Bernhardt. Here, lettering is an important part of the design, in keeping with the Art Nouveau typography the poster is known for. The image was shown in 2018 at the exhibition "Alfons Mucha et les Bergès : une amitié", held at the musée de la Houille blanche in Villard-Bonnot, Isère.

On your wall: A good fit for a study, living room or hallway where you want a touch of vintage theatre and Art Nouveau character, especially alongside other period posters.
