This colour lithograph poster by Jules Chéret dates from 1891 and advertises L'Etendard Français, a maker of bicycles and tricycles with workshops on the Quai d'Orsay in Paris. A woman dressed in red rides a bicycle while holding a tricolour flag, so the French name of the brand is carried through the picture as well as the lettering. The poster was printed by Imprimerie Chaix, in the Chéret workshops, and measures 120 by 87 cm. Chéret is remembered as a leading figure of Belle Époque poster art.
On your wall: The bold reds and the cheerful cycling scene suit a hallway, study or living room, and would sit well in a café-style kitchen or a space with a vintage feel.

Jules Chéret was a French painter and lithographer who became a leading figure in Belle Époque poster art. His work in this field was so influential that he has often been called the father of the modern poster. His name remains closely tied to the colourful, eye-catching street posters of that era.
