This is a poster Jules Chéret made in 1876 to advertise an evening's entertainment at the Folies-Bergère in Paris. The title promises Jefferson, l'homme-poisson, the 'fish-man', and announces that he appears every evening. It belongs to the world of music-hall revues, cafés-concerts and circus acts that Chéret's posters publicised. The work is a colour lithograph, printed from Chéret's own press, and measures 51 by 62 centimetres. Chéret is often called the father of the modern poster, and this early example shows how he turned a notice for a show into a piece of street art.
On your wall: Its theatrical subject and period lettering suit a living room, bar, den or hallway, especially where a retro or vintage look is wanted.

Jules Chéret was a French painter and lithographer who became a leading figure in Belle Époque poster art. His work in this field was so influential that he has often been called the father of the modern poster. His name remains closely tied to the colourful, eye-catching street posters of that era.
