This is a poster by Jules Chéret, made in Paris in 1874 to advertise Les Aztecs at Frascati. It was produced as a colour lithograph and is large in its original form, measuring 127 by 90 centimetres. It belongs to the world of café-concerts and popular entertainment, where posters like this called passers-by to an evening's show. Chéret, a French painter and lithographer, is often called the father of the modern poster, and this early work shows his trade at its most practical and lively. The original is held in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
