About this artwork

Leonetto Cappiello designed this poster in 1906 for La Revue Illustrée, and its title doubles as the slogan: it promises twice the luxury at a lower price, and claims the Revue is travelling the world. It is a colour lithograph on a grand scale, measuring 164 by 112 centimetres, and it was printed in Paris. Cappiello is often called the father of modern advertising, known for bold figures set against dark backgrounds, a sharp break from the more painterly posters that came before. The poster belongs to the early years of that new approach to street advertising.

On your wall: Its bold period lettering and poster character suit a study, a library, a hallway or a living room with a retro or vintage feel.

About Leonetto Cappiello

Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian and French poster designer and painter who lived and worked mainly in Paris. He is often called the father of modern advertising. While earlier poster artists favoured a painterly look, he took the opposite path, setting bold figures against black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters that came before.
