About this artwork

Leonetto Cappiello designed this poster in 1901 to promote the summer season at the resort of Livorno, running from July to September. It also announced an exposition of local arts and industries, with a lively programme that included wine and photography displays, decorative arts, illustrated postcards, motor cars, competitions, horse races, regattas and assorted festivities. At its centre is a woman with strings of paper lanterns, a cheerful image that suits the holiday occasion. Cappiello later became widely known for his advertising posters, and this early work shows him designing for a public event.

On your wall: Its festive subject and period lettering suit a dining room, a kitchen or a hallway, and it sits well in rooms with a retro or Mediterranean feel.

About Leonetto Cappiello

Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian and French poster designer and painter who lived and worked mainly in Paris. He is often called the father of modern advertising. While earlier poster artists favoured a painterly look, he took the opposite path, setting bold figures against black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters that came before.
