About this artwork

This 1907 poster by Leonetto Cappiello advertises Angelus, a liqueur of the Salésiens de Dom Bosco. A figure in red robes and a red cap rings a large bronze bell, set against a dark blue background. The lettering names the liqueur and its makers. The poster was printed in Paris by P. Vercasson and belongs to Cappiello's alcohol advertising work. Cappiello is often called the father of modern advertising, and his posters are known for placing bold figures against dark grounds, a approach you can see in the strong red against the blue here.

On your wall: The deep blue and strong red suit a study, dining room, or bar corner, and sit well in rooms with a vintage or traditional feel.

About Leonetto Cappiello

Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian and French poster designer and painter who lived and worked mainly in Paris. He is often called the father of modern advertising. While earlier poster artists favoured a painterly look, he took the opposite path, setting bold figures against black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters that came before.
