About this artwork

This colour lithograph poster by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec portrays the dancer May Milton. She appears in a billowing pale dress, set against a dark blue ground that makes the soft fabric stand out. Her name is lettered across the top of the sheet, so the image works as both portrait and announcement. The poster comes from Toulouse-Lautrec's work as a printmaker, in which he drew on the colourful, theatrical life of Belle Époque Paris.

On your wall: The dark blue ground and pale dress suit a study, living room, hallway or bedroom, especially where a vintage poster can add a calm, theatrical note.

About Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator. He worked in Paris during the Belle Époque, the late nineteenth century, and threw himself into the city's colourful, theatrical life. That immersion shaped his popular artworks, which drew their subjects from the lively and often decadent world around him.
