About this artwork

Toulouse-Lautrec made this poster in 1895 as a colour lithograph on wove paper. It shows a red-haired dancer in a voluminous white dress, caught as she lifts her skirt. The name 'May Milton' appears in faint lettering, and the artist's HTL monogram is placed with the date '95. The poster form suits the subject well: the figure is drawn with a few bold, flowing areas of colour, and the pale dress stands out against the fiery hair. It belongs to the world of Parisian entertainment that Toulouse-Lautrec drew on throughout his career.

On your wall: Its white, red and soft tones suit a living room, a hallway or a study where you want some vintage theatrical energy without overpowering the space.

About Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator. He worked in Paris during the Belle Époque, the late nineteenth century, and threw himself into the city's colourful, theatrical life. That immersion shaped his popular artworks, which drew their subjects from the lively and often decadent world around him.
