About this artwork

This 1892 lithograph poster by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec portrays his friend Aristide Bruant, the cabaret singer, in connection with the Café des Ambassadeurs. Bruant appears in a black hat, a red scarf and a blue cape, and he holds a stick. The lettering names both the Ambassadeurs and Bruant in his cabaret, so the image works as a portrait and an announcement at once. Made as a print, it shows how Toulouse-Lautrec turned a person from his own circle into a poster for the streets of Paris. The original is held at the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec.

On your wall: The strong red and blue against black suit a study, hallway, living room or any space with a vintage, café or retro feel.

About Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator. He worked in Paris during the Belle Époque, the late nineteenth century, and threw himself into the city's colourful, theatrical life. That immersion shaped his popular artworks, which drew their subjects from the lively and often decadent world around him.
