Alphonse Mucha made this Art Nouveau poster in 1898 to advertise Waverley Cycles. A woman with bare shoulders leans on an anvil, a laurel branch in her hand, with a pair of bicycle handlebars close beside her. Behind her the background is a strong red. It belongs to the group of French advertising posters of the period that treated bicycles as fashionable modern objects, and it shows the decorative, stylised approach for which Mucha was known. A copy is held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
On your wall: The warm red and graceful figure suit a study, hallway or living room, and will appeal to anyone who enjoys cycling or vintage advertising.
