Driving Rain at Shōno, from Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaidō

Utagawa Hiroshige, 1833

Rain sweeps across a hillside road as travellers hurry on, with bamboo fading into soft grey behind them. Hiroshige makes the weather the real subject.

About this artwork

Hiroshige's 1833 colour woodblock print shows two groups of travellers caught in a downpour on the Tokaidō, the road that ran from Kyoto to Edo, now Tokyo. Shōno was a minor way station along this largely coastal route. The thickets of bamboo in the background recede through three shades of grey, each needing its own printing block. Look closely at one traveller's umbrella, where the publisher's name, Takenouchi, and part of the series title, Fifty-Three Stations, are written. Hiroshige made many different print series on the Tokaidō.

On your wall: Its restrained greys and quiet, rain-soaked scene suit calm spaces such as a study, hallway, bedroom or living room with a muted, natural palette.

About Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
