About this artwork

This colour woodblock print by Ohara Koson brings three separate scenes together on one sheet. On the left, three green birds perch on a branch beside a persimmon. In the middle, a sparrow feeds an insect to its young beneath an overhanging branch with green leaves and yellow flowers. On the right, a red poppy blooms abundantly. The print was made in Japan from a black outline block combined with blocks of colour, printed on Japanese paper. Koson was a designer of woodblock prints working at the turn of the twentieth century, and birds and plants are a clear focus of this sheet.

On your wall: Its soft greens, yellows and a single note of red suit a calm study, a hallway or a bedroom, and sit well beside natural materials and light wood.
