This panoramic scene shows the autumn moon over Kanazawa, near Tokyo. Along the coastline you can pick out villages, fishing boats and a distinctive double-arched bridge at the bottom right, a landmark Hiroshige's contemporaries would have recognised. Made in 1857, late in his career, it is a triptych of colour woodblock prints, three sheets that join to form one wide view. It belongs to a set of three triptychs in which Hiroshige explored setsugekka, the poetic theme of snow, moon and flowers. This one gives the moon its place.
On your wall: Its wide, calm landscape format suits a living room above a sofa, a study or a quiet bedroom, and it sits well in Japanese-inspired or understated interiors.

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
