About this artwork

Hiroshige's colour woodblock print shows the Great Bridge over the Sumida River in Edo, now Tokyo, caught in a sudden downpour. Travellers cross in both directions, each trying to shelter from the sheets of rain, while the Atake neighbourhood appears in the distance. The bridge had been rebuilt after the great earthquake and fire of 1855, and the print was published in 1857, two years later. It shows how well Hiroshige could capture atmospheric conditions, turning a passing shower into the heart of the scene. It dates from Japan's Edo period.

On your wall: Its calm river view and rain-swept atmosphere suit a study, living room, hallway or any quiet space where Japanese art and a sense of movement are welcome.

About Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
