Utagawa Hiroshige, 1797
A seaside street at Shinagawa, with teahouses along the road and sailing boats out in the bay, shown in a Japanese colour woodblock print.

This colour woodblock print shows Shinagawa, one of the views in Hiroshige's Hoeido Tokaido series. A street runs along the coast, lined with teahouses, where porters go about their business. Beyond the buildings, sailing boats dot the bay. The print carries the signature Hiroshige ga. It belongs to the Edo period in Japan and is an example of ukiyo-e, the tradition of which Hiroshige is considered the last great master.
On your wall: Its coastal scene and Japanese print character suit a calm living room, a study or a hallway, particularly where traditional or understated decor is wanted.

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
