About this artwork

This Meiji-period colour woodblock print shows three men warming sake in a pot over a fire of fallen maple leaves, beneath a red maple tree. It was made in 1886 by Inoue Yasuji as part of the series Instructive Models of Lofty Ambition. The title links the scene to Emperor Takakura and to the unpaid workers known as jichō who served him. The red of the maple leaves gives the quiet autumn scene its warmth. Prints from this series are held in the Japanese print collection of the Centre Céramique in Maastricht.

On your wall: The warm reds of the maple suit a calm living room, study or dining area, especially where autumn tones or natural wood are already present.
